Junior Tennis Coaching

Our junior group programme is available for all ages and all abilities and takes place on our indoor courts all year round. You can join our courses at any time if a space is available.

All children are entitled to a one week free trial in any of the groups below as we would like to ensure each child enjoys the tennis session and are in the correct group for their standard. 

We have over 50 groups running throughout the week for 42 weeks of the year. So we can definitely find the appropriate group for your child.

Junior Tennis

Tiny Tots (2-4 Yrs)

  • Mini TotsFor children aged 2-4 years 
  • Enables children to learn the basic skills and how to enjoy the game through a series of fun activities, based on balance, coordination, agility ,movement, and racket and ball skills.
  • Played with a sponge ball and mini tennis nets to make the game as fun as possible

 

Tiny Tots runs on a Saturday mornings.  Weekday classes coming soon!!

Mini Tennis Red (4-8 Yrs)

  • Mini RedMini Tennis Red is for players aged 8 and under. It is played on small courts with short rackets and soft balls. It’s just like the real game and gives players opportunities to have long rallies and play different types of shots.
  • Our sessions are a fun way to develop moving, hitting, throwing and catching skills plus the basic racket skills needed for tennis.
  • Mini Tennis Red is for players aged 8 & under and is played with a foam or felt ball which is 75% slower than a yellow ball and children use a shorter racket of 43cm – 58 cm (17” – 23”) which is recommended depending on the size and strength of the player.
  • As players progress they are encouraged to play fun competitions in teams and as individuals, with short matches using tie-break scoring.

 

Abbeydale run Mini Tennis Red sessions on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday, with up to three separate sessions on some days.  Please ring or e-mail for advice on which day and time would be best.

Mini Tennis Orange (8-9 Yrs)

  • Mini Orange​for players aged 8-9 years old
  • Played with an orange ball that is 50% slower than a yellow ball allowing players to develop a rounded game whilst learning a range of techniques and tactics. 
  • Mini Tennis Orange is played on a 18mx6.5m court and is the next stage before playing on a full tennis court. 

 

Mini Orange runs on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday.

Mini Tennis Green (9-10 Yrs)

  • Mini GreenTennis Green is a great way for players to continue their progress from Mini Tennis Orange. It is played on a full size tennis court, with Mini Tennis rackets and balls which are a little softer than yellow balls.
  • It’s the next stage before moving on to full compression yellow balls on a full sized court and helps players develop and improve all aspects of their game.
  • Mini Tennis Green is for children aged aged 9 & 10, played on a normal size court, with a larger rackets and green balls that are 25% slower than a full yellow ball.

 

Abbeydale run Mini Tennis Green sessions Thursday, Friday & Saturday with smaller pupil to coach ratios as players need more space. The Mini Tennis Green groups are split into specific standards, so the players are with children of a similar age & level of ability.

Full Ball (11+ Yrs)

  • for Players aged 11 +
  • Played on a full size tennis court with the yellow ball, this is the last progression for your child after mini tennis
  • Full ball sessions provide a fun and structured environment for your child to learn in.
  • your child will learn technique, tactics and full ball scoring
  • with the groups split into levels ranging from 1-5 there is definitely a group to suit your child.

 

Full ball groups run most weekdays and Saturday. Groups are split in to either 11-14yrs or 15-18yrs and then are futher split in to levels 1-5.  Please ring or e-mail for more advice on which group would be the best for your child.
